Choosing Battles

Like a pool table, he jokes; six holes.
Yes, based on the angles of entry,
each blade three times -
answers the Doc;
Thinking: Looks like Lady Luck kept your cue ball from sinking.

That’ll teach me to get involved, huh?; said through a gnash smile.
Sometimes a great notion to jump in,
But if you can see through to the craziness, takes courage to walk away -
thinks the Doc;
Saying: Behind the eight ball, but fixable this time.

Stay clear of locals' business; not like I wasn't repeatedly told.
Tour of duty you can’t ask what the fight is about.
But on the street you’re a tourist; not your 'hood - did you think it was? -
asked the Doc;
Thinking: Will he be more cautious or feel invincible after this?

It was a win/win sign-up, he snides; education for me or death benefits for the family.
Everyone questioned seems to not to have been there,
drug deal maybe; the uniform just flared other grudges -
said the Doc;
Thinking: Other people’s business and battles all over the place.
