Alan Hovhaness conducts the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
"The work is an essay in celestial harmonies, magnificent in concept, visionary in content, and quite moving to hear. There is a sort of golden sunlight that permeates every measure and there are melodies of vaguely Asian character that penetrate this sunlight, like religious hymns sung in some far-off place. There is a certain amount of aleatoric, or chance, music here and there, but the structure of the work is entirely tonal, or perhaps one should say 'modal', because of the frequent use of Oriental scales. To my mind, Fra Angelico is one of Mr. Hovhaness's finest works."
